A Mayne Street store site with a continuous retail history stretching back to the 1840s.
This site has hosted a shop since the 1840s, when a shoemaker first set up on land bought by Denis Reardon. A general store followed in 1872, eventually passing to the Dooley family in 1905 - Joseph Dooley built the current store, and the family (with up to 25 staff at their peak) ran it for 75 years before selling in 1979. The store even had its own “Flying Fox” payment system - wires strung from the ceiling that sent money and invoices to a central office and returned change and receipts to the counter. One of 30 stops on the town's Heritage Walk.
