Bridge House

An 1856 National Trust-listed home on Mayne Street, named after the river crossing it once overlooked.

Built around 1856 for Caroline Wightman (who also ran the White Hart Hotel), Bridge House takes its name from Arnolds Bridge, the river crossing built nearby in the 1860s that she famously christened with a bottle of champagne. The house served for a time as a school, and later became known as the Doctors Residence, home to a succession of the town's doctors including Dr Rufus Bell, Dr Bertram Middleton and Dr Ruth Godden. One of 30 stops on the town's Heritage Walk.
